The Tornimäe Neitsi Maria Kaitsmise Church

The Tornimäe Neitsi Maria Kaitsmise Church is at the heart of the village’s history. The Baroque building is made of stone blocks and has a cruciform floor plan. Its most distinctive features are the large central dome, four smaller corner domes and the western bell tower.

Its location is also historically significant: the church stands on a high coastal bank near an old settlement site and a harbor site. The Tornimäe community center is located at the intersection of four roads in the heart of Tornimäe. Its location makes it a clearly identifiable landmark within the village. Concerts, performances, parties, exhibitions and conferences are held at the community center.

Harbor Site and Archaeological Landscape

The harbor site of Tornimäe was abandoned around the year 1000, possibly in connection with land uplift. The historic harbor site was a suitable landing place for ships traveling, for example, from Gotland to the Gulf of Finland.

Today, the archaeological site of Tornimäe lies about 2 km from the sea. During the Viking Age, however, it was located on the seashore. This approximate distance vividly illustrates how significantly the spatial relationship between the settlement site and the sea has changed. Those who choose Tornimäe can therefore consider not only individual sights, but also the historical development of the landscape.

Juhan Peegel and the History of the Village

A bronze sculpture of Juhan Peegel was unveiled beside the Tornimäe school in Juhan Peegel’s native area. The sculpture depicts him sitting on a glacial erratic. Together with the church, cemeteries and archaeological site, this work broadens the view of Tornimäe to include a more personal form of commemorative culture.
