Lilbi on Saaremaa

The village’s connection with the Saaremaa Museum is particularly noteworthy: Between 2016 and 2024, a farmer from Lilbi handed over hundreds of prehistoric objects found on his land to the museum. The archaeological finds include Viking Age silver coins. In addition, the first animal-shaped weight discovered on Saaremaa was found in Lilbi. Lilbi has a long settlement history. In 1630–1631, the village bore the place name Lilpe Jurg; around 1900, the name was written in Cyrillic. In the 18th century, Lilbi, also known as Lilby, was an independent estate. Between 1744 and 1750, this estate was separated from Uuelõve and Vanalõve. Village Structure and Landscape

Lilbi is also part of a typical example of a settlement landscape with a clustered settlement structure in the southern part of the former Kaarma-Suurvald. The word “former” is important here because it refers to the earlier administrative unit. For choosing a destination on Saaremaa, this primarily means that Lilbi can be viewed as a historically shaped, continuous settlement area, not merely as a single point on the map.
