Tūja
Beach and nature on the Tūja coast
Tūja combines a stay by the sea with nature observation, peaceful moments on the beach and excursions in the surrounding area. Tūja Beach is a sandy beach with gentle waves and extensive opportunities for walks along the shore. The coastal section differs from the rocky Vidzeme coast visible from the landscape garden. This means that a sandy beach and a view of a rocky coastal landscape are found side by side in the surrounding area. The alternation between sandy beach and rocky coast shapes the landscape character of the area.
Bathing areas and protected coastal landscape
At the Krimalnieki bathing area, there is an old stone mole and a car park directly on the beach. Buses and cars can be parked in the car park. A mole is a stone dam or breakwater that extends into the water.
At the Tūja bathing area, north of the Zaķupe River’s mouth into the sea, the “Vidzemes akmeņainā jūrmala” nature reserve begins. The river mouth lies south of the protected area. Thus, the Zaķupe mouth is the southern reference point of the protected coastal section, while the Tūja bathing area lies north of it, at the beginning of the nature reserve. This location connects the bathing area with the river mouth and the protected coastal section. A nature reserve is a geographically defined area with special protection status.
The “Vidzemes akmeņainais daiļdārzs” landscape garden, maintained by O. Kiršteins, features a natural ravine and offers a view of the rocky Vidzeme coast. The erratic boulder “Zaķi boulder” also has the second name “Zaķupe boulder”; both names refer to the same erratic boulder. An erratic boulder is a single large stone. It is a geological and geomorphological natural monument. Its location is specified using two details: it lies east of the village of Tūja and 150 metres north of the Zaķupe River. The figure of 150 metres refers to the distance from the Zaķupe; the eastern direction takes the village of Tūja as its reference point. The terms geological and geomorphological refer to the rock and the shape of the landscape. The garden is a maintained site with a natural ravine and a coastal view, whereas the erratic boulder is an individual natural monument.
