Zvejniekciems between a rocky beach and a harbor

Zvejniekciems combines the coast of Skulte with a rocky beach, maritime history and cultural traces. The settlement emerged in the 19th century as a small fishing village; its name also derives from the inhabitants’ main occupation, fishing. Rocky Beach and Coastal Paths

The rocky beach of Zvejniekciems lies between the harbor of Skulte and the beach of Saulkrasti. The first rocks appear on the beach before reaching the harbor of Skulte. The section is promoted as a stopover for weddings and as a good location for photo shoots. The first kilometers of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route to Zvejniekciems can be covered on the beach or on a path running through the dune forest with old pine trees. This presents two contrasting coastal landscapes side by side: the open beach and the path defined by dune forest and old pines. The northern pier of the harbor of Skulte is designated as a sight in Zvejniekciems. A boat launching site is also located in the settlement.

Harbor, Fishing Village and Cultural History

The history of the harbor dates back to 1939: the harbor of Skulte was opened on October 7, 1939. Zvejniekciems is also home to a stone selected by Kārlis Ulmanis as a testimony to the construction of the harbor.

Architecture is also part of the identity of the place. The “Zvejniekciems” Culture House was designed by Latvian architect Marta Staņa. “Melnalkšņi” is part of the architectural heritage of the same architect in Zvejniekciems. The “Zvejniekciems” Culture Club opened on November 8, 1956, and has a large hall with seating for 700 spectators. In this way, historic building and event culture complement the fishing village’s maritime themes.
