Ahrensbök: Hotels and Accommodation

The landscape around Ahrensbök extends from the eastern hill country across marshes and deciduous forests to the Baltic Sea beaches. Many forests in Ahrensbök are used for walking and nature experiences.

Nature and Trails

The Ostholstein district recommends the bee nature trail in Ahrensbök as an educational nature trail. In the nearby area, the trekking site offers a wide view over the valley; birds, lizards, insects, red kites and white-tailed eagles can be spotted there. Other natural features in Ahrensbök include an educational hiking trail and the Ahrensbök forestry office.

The Via Jutlandica Eastern Route between Plön and Lübeck runs through Ahrensbök. It is considered a 155-kilometre pilgrimage route and is consistently marked with a stylized shell and yellow arrows. Along the routes through Ahrensbök, the former castle park is one of the highlights. A circular route leads through Dunkelsdorf, Ahrensbök, Gnissau and Cashagen. A second route leads from Scharbeutz via Raketau to Bad Schwartau and forms a circular route that includes Ahrensbök and nearby villages in the southern part of the municipality.

Pilgrimage Route and Church

A pilgrimage chapel already stood at the site of St. Mary's Church in Ahrensbök before 1300. St. Mary's Church itself was first built in 1328. It invites visitors to discover historical traces from different centuries and the changing interior of the church. The church is open during the day; stamps for the pilgrim's passport are available from the church office and the vicarage.

History and Remembrance

The Ahrensbök Memorial presents a permanent exhibition on five themes relating to National Socialism and persecution in the region. As an extracurricular place of learning, it brings history particularly close to younger visitors. The memorial offers guided tours for school and youth groups, as well as other groups, by prior booking.

Ahrensbök Castle was built between 1593 and 1601 and demolished in 1765.

Getting Around Locally

Eight bus routes serve the municipality of Ahrensbök, and all stop in the central area of Ahrensbök. Bus services are concentrated mainly around school hours; there are few connections during holidays and at weekends.
