Schönwalde am Bungsberg: Hotels and Accommodation
Schönwalde am Bungsberg is located between the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein and the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, rich in forests and lakes. There is also access to a well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails.
Landscape
At 168 metres high, the Bungsberg near Schönwalde is the highest elevation in Schleswig-Holstein. On the mountain there is a visitor plateau with an observation tower and information centre, which can be reached via a short hike or by car. The telecommunications tower, which is open to visitors, has an observation platform with views across Holstein Switzerland towards the Baltic Sea.
The Elisabethturm stands directly next to the telecommunications tower. The listed building is around 22 metres high and has an octagonal shape. The tower was built in 1863 and 1864.
Nature
The Historic Schönwalde Vicarage Nature Experience Area covers approximately 4.5 hectares. It includes the historic vicarage complex with the vicarage, parish hall and vicarage barn.
Another nature experience area includes a restored glacial depression, picnic areas, a scouts’ camp with a fire pit, and newly designed orchards and vicarage gardens. It is open to the public and laid out as a circular spiritual Way of the Cross. The site also includes a butterfly garden with wildflowers and an information point for birdwatching at the wetland. The presentation of the Schönwalde Way of the Cross is intended for pilgrims and individual visitors seeking spiritual experiences.
Culture
The church and settlement of Schönwalde were first mentioned in a document dating from 1240. Schönwalde Church was founded by Benedictine monks from Lübeck and is one of the younger fieldstone churches built in East Holstein at the end of the colonisation period.
The village museum is housed in the former village school and presents the everyday lives of farmers, craftsmen and housewives in the 19th and 20th centuries. The rooms include a historic classroom with slate boards and Mittelholm benches, traditional school benches with a central support beam.
Routes
The Viertenteilshufe Route leads to the fieldstone church, the village pond, the village and school museum, and the Schönwalde am Bungsberg Nature Experience Area. The route is recorded digitally, but has no on-site markings. Visitors are advised to follow the tour description.
The local navigation also leads from here to Mönchneversdorf.
