Wangels: Hotels and Accommodations

Wangels lies between the Baltic Sea coast and the Bungsberg, surrounded by fields, meadows, hedgerows, and small forests. The village is located near the Bungsberg landscape conservation area, a hilly landscape formed during the last ice age. Around Wangels, hiking and cycling trails lead through fields and forests as well as along small streams.

Nature

One of the region’s distinctive natural areas is the Weißenhäuser Brök, which is one of the largest dune areas on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1942, 57 hectares of the area were designated as a nature reserve. The Weißenhäuser Brök is also part of the Natura 2000 network – both as a Special Area of Conservation and as a bird sanctuary. The nature reserve contains semi-natural dry dune grasslands and heathlands that support rare plant and animal species.

The visitor paths crossing the Weißenhäuser Brök between the holiday centre and the beach areas are fenced off from the adjacent sensitive dunes. The Weißenhäuser Börk stretches along the Baltic Sea coast and has a historical connection with the Oldenburger Graben. Near Wangels, there is also a small alder carr in the Bungsberg landscape conservation area, characterized as an alder swamp forest with permanently wet, partly flooded conditions.

Things to Do

The Ostsee Baumhaushotel in Wangels is described as a nature-oriented retreat with 14 tree houses on an approximately 25-hectare site and a two-kilometre nature trail. There is a water-ski facility in the Wesseker See nature reserve. The Weissenhäuser Strand holiday and leisure park offers families swimming, sports, and wellness activities; the pier at Weissenhäuser Strand is promoted as a place for leisurely walks.

From Wangels, the Baltic Sea coast, Weissenhäuser Strand, Hohwacht, Sehlendorf, and Holstein Switzerland are considered quickly accessible. A published driving route from Hamburg to Wangels follows the A1 towards Lübeck, takes exit 17-Neustadt-Nord, and then continues on the B501 towards Neustadt. Regional bus connections run to Wangels; changing buses in Oldenburg in Holstein is possible.

Culture and History

The Wangelser Gilde was founded in 1838 and preserves local traditions. Its traditional Whitsun festival includes a village parade, ceremonial shooting, and an evening ball. The Farver Mill was built in 1828 as a three-storey Dutch windmill and can be rented as holiday accommodation.

The use of the Oldenburger Graben as a waterway by Slavic communities more than 1,200 years ago is associated with it.
