Barkelsby: Hotels and Accommodation

Barkelsby is situated in the hilly landscape of Schwansen. Particularly in spring, the town’s highest elevations rise above blooming fields of rapeseed and grain.

Landscape and Nature

The 159-hectare Hemmelmarker See Special Area of Conservation is located largely within the municipality of Barkelsby, in the Schwansen landscape. As a former arm of the sea, it has been preserved as a coastal lake; its landscape includes sandy and gravel beaches as well as sections of cliff coast. The protected area’s beach sections are used for swimming, horseback riding and walking. At times, little ringed plovers and sand martins breed there, while migratory and wintering birds use the area as a resting and feeding ground.

Culture and History

Gut Hohenstein, which has an attached local history museum, belongs to Barkelsby. The estate is listed as a historic manor and comprises a manor house, a thatched former dairy house and former farm buildings. The former farm buildings preserve the character of rural life in earlier times and are presented as part of the estate’s heritage.

The former manor house stands at Gut Hemmelmark and was built in 1903/04 in the English country-house style. The historic buildings there also include two thatched estate barns dating from the 18th century.

The surroundings of Barkelsby include Noer Strand, the wildlife park and Lindholm. Gallberg is located in the immediate vicinity. The wider regional area includes the runestone, Gottorf Castle, the State Museum, the Edelsturm ruins and Haithabu.
