In Brugge, St. John’s Church stands on a small hill overlooking the Eider. The building is a remarkable late Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. Its present appearance dates back to the beginning of the 13th century.

Culture and History

The former round-arched windows and the north portal of St. John’s Church are still clearly visible in the masonry. The octagonal church tower is 42 metres high and, after the church itself, is the second-oldest building in Brugge. Inside, the unusual baldachin altar is considered the most significant feature of St. John’s Church.

The Fleitenmarkt, a small fair held in Brugge around St. John’s Day and celebrated for centuries, is part of the local annual calendar.

Landscape

Brüggerholz, a part of the village consisting of scattered farmsteads and considered particularly picturesque, belongs to Brugge. In the surrounding countryside, the Westensee–Upper Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous lake complexes in the Schleswig-Holstein uplands. The banks of the Eider in the nature park provide a habitat for kingfishers.

The Eider Valley is a glacial meltwater channel with spring and through-flow bogs. The area is equipped for visitors with public transport, information boards, seating and shelters. A hiking trail through the Eider Valley provides information about historical agriculture and gravel extraction.

Getting Around

Bordesholm is a railway station on the Hamburg–Neumünster–Kiel line. The walk from the station to Brugge takes about 20 minutes.

The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours and twelve themed routes ranging from 24 to 79 kilometres in length.
