Hohn: Hotels and Accommodation
Lake Hohn is considered the last remaining Geest shallow lake and, together with Königsmoor and Hartshooper Moor, forms part of a nature reserve.
Nature and Wildlife
The lake provides a breeding and resting habitat for numerous bird species. In autumn, thousands of migratory birds gather there before flying south. At the otter enclosure, visitors can encounter young otters from viewing platforms; wild otters can also be observed in the surrounding rivers, streams and ditches, as well as at Lake Hohn.
Water and Paths
The Hohn Ferry offers pedestrians and cyclists a crossing of the Eider in a natural setting.
Village History and Places of Remembrance
Hohn’s old railway station houses the Hohn Village Museum. Objects donated by local residents document village life there; a database supports genealogical research reaching back to the colonists of the 18th century. The old railway station also displays a Transall aircraft and an exhibition on Air Transport Wing 63. Near the railway station, the old railway embankment is used as a cycle and footpath; the station also houses an exhibition about Lake Hohn.
The more than 300-year-old St. Mary’s Church was inaugurated in 1694. Its furnishings include a medieval baptismal font, a late-medieval crucifix, and carvings on the pulpit and west gallery.
The Backhuus at the village museum is a wood-fired stone oven used on designated dates under the guidance of experienced bakers to bake bread, cakes and pizza for local residents or as part of museum events.
In the Surrounding Region
The wider region around Hohn is home to the rune stone, the cultural-historical monument known as the Schalenstein, Gottorf Castle, the State Museum, Haithabu, Mövenberg and Aschberg. The Büttelberg is located in the area surrounding Hohn.
