Hohn: Hotels and Accommodation
Nature and Wildlife
Lake Hohn is considered the last remaining shallow geest lake and is part of a nature reserve bordering the Königsmoor and Hartshooper Moor. It is a breeding and resting area for numerous bird species; in autumn, thousands of migratory birds gather there.
At the Hohn otter enclosure, an observation platform offers views of two young otters. The municipality also names the local waters and Lake Hohn as places where wild otters may be seen.
Travelling Between Water and Landscape
The Eider crossing known as the Hohn Ferry for pedestrians and cyclists continues a historic ferry connection first recorded in 1634 and resumed in 1999. The former railway embankment in Hohn is used as a cycle and footpath and connects the area around the old railway station with the local cultural and natural attractions.
The Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route runs through the wider river landscape around Hohn and extends for 240 kilometres through wetlands, moors, shallow lakes, mixed forests, and geest and marsh landscapes.
Culture and History
The Hohn Village Museum shows, in its rooms, how people lived in Hohn around a century ago. On display are tools, household items, handicrafts, porcelain, and documents donated by local residents. The archive also supports genealogical research.
A Transall aircraft stands at the old Hohn railway station, accompanied by a military history exhibition about Air Transport Wing 63 and the aircraft’s connection with the municipality. The more than 300-year-old St. Mary’s Church was inaugurated in 1694 and preserves a medieval baptismal font, a late medieval crucifix, and carved details on the pulpit and west gallery.
