Sophienhamm: Hotels and Accommodation

Sophienhamm is closely connected to the Hartshoper Moor, which is associated with the village as a protected landscape area. At the same time, the moor has NATURA 2000 protected status.

Nature

The restored moorland landscape comprises raised bog, wet heathland, moorland forests, transitional bogs and wet grassland. Rare moorland plants include bog asphodel, cotton grass and peat mosses. Rare animals such as snipes, red-backed shrikes, dragonflies and moor frogs can also be found here. Between the end of March and the end of April, the male moor frogs turn blue for a few days.

Hiking and Trails

Guided hikes are possible through the Hartshoper Moor. An approximately six-kilometre circular hiking route also offers optional diversions along areas undergoing rewetting. Cycling is also possible on the hiking trails of the Hartshoper Moor.

There are picnic areas at the viewpoints in the Hartshoper Moor; benches and tables are available at some locations.

Geographical Location

Sophienhamm is located on the B202 between Rendsburg and St. Peter-Ording; the historic place name Oha is associated with the area. The Stiftungsland Hohner See nature area lies directly to the north in the nearby surroundings and can be reached via a hiking trail. The Stiftungsland Dellstedter Birkwildmoor nature area lies south of the Hartshoper Moor.

History

Sophienhamm was founded in 1762 as the fifteenth in a series of settler villages in the region. Later, there were 23 colonist farms, settled by 22 farmers and one teacher with their families. For around 200 years, the inhabitants lived mainly from agriculture and livestock farming; some households supplemented their income by selling peat.
