Osterrönfeld combines the history of a place on the Kiel Canal with surroundings shaped by water, technology and nature. At the motorhome site at the NOK Canal Café, there are 33 pitches on three levels. The facility is open all year round; every pitch offers views of the Kiel Canal and the passing ship traffic.

History

The first documentation of Osterrönfeld dates from 1330 and is associated with the construction of a chapel outside Rendsburg. Archaeological finds indicate a settlement in the area between 3000 and 1800 BC; its core was located in the southeast of the present-day town.

A major fire in May 1702 destroyed the old village almost completely. The subsequent reconstruction created the present-day layout of the town. The railway reached Osterrönfeld in 1845 and became an important impetus for the town’s development. The construction of the Kiel Canal from 1887 to 1895 was also an important impetus for Osterrönfeld’s development.

Culture

The local St. Michael’s Church was consecrated in 1953 and has a free-standing bell tower. Services, community events and concerts take place there several times a year. The New Port Kiel-Canal-Rendsburg Port is regarded as a contemporary industrial monument and specialises in handling heavy goods and containers.

Nearby, the railway high bridge spans the Kiel Canal. It was completed in 1913, is 2,486 metres long and has a clearance height of 42 metres.

Nature

Within the built-up area of the town there are green spaces, walking paths and woodland. The Wilde Moor lies near Osterrönfeld; smooth newts and bluethroats can be found there.

Region

The Rendsburg region brings together the Kiel Canal, the Eider, green excursion destinations, technological landmarks, maritime experiences, cultural attractions and peaceful natural areas. Activities include watching ships, cycling, swimming and walking through historic towns.

Other places in the same regional context include Neu Duvenstedt, Schwedeneck, Hohenwestedt, Osdorf, Altenholz, Brügge, Dörphof and Meezen.
