Historic Rendsburg

Rendsburg’s historic centre is characterised by narrow, winding streets, the gabled Old Town Hall on the Altstädter Markt and St Mary’s Church with ceiling paintings and an altar that is largely made of wood.

The Rendsburg Jewish Museum is housed in the only originally preserved synagogue in Schleswig-Holstein. The historic site is both a cultural monument and a memorial.

Technology and shipping

The Rendsburg railway bridge is an important technical monument. A suspension ferry is attached to it, serving pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The Rendsburg Shipping Archive presents the history and present of Rendsburg’s shipping industry, shipowners and shipyards across 550 square metres. Exhibits include sextants, nautical charts and more than 120 ship models.

On the Kiel Canal

Rendsburg’s ship greeting facility is located at the bridge terraces – the only facility of its kind on the Kiel Canal. It provides visitors with information about passing ships and greets them with the national anthem of their country of origin.

At a publicly accessible landing stage on the Lower Eider, recreational athletes can launch SUP boards or canoes. Rendsburg’s waterside locations also support stand-up paddling and canoeing.

Green connections

Rendsburg Stadtpark is home to more than 70 tree species and numerous animals. At the same time, it connects the Old Town with Neuwerk: the 14-hectare green recreational area is crossed by Stadtsee, a branch of the Eider.

Getting around and contemporary art

Pedestrians and cyclists can use a 130-metre-long tunnel beneath the Kiel Canal. The NOK Route runs from Brunsbüttel to Kiel along the canal via Rendsburg; it is largely flat and has only a few inclines.

In neighbouring Büdelsdorf, which borders Rendsburg, NordArt is an important exhibition of contemporary art.
