Schinkel: Hotels and Accommodation

In the village center of Schinkel, Hof Mevs operates a pick-your-own flower field. The benches there are suitable for resting after a bike ride, having a picnic, and observing insects. The flowering period is approximately from mid-June to early October.

Nature and Trails

Schinkel’s nature trail is six kilometers long and offers views across fields, the canal, forests, and meadows. It runs mainly along farm tracks and includes only a few sections on roads; benches along the route provide places to rest. The historic village tour runs exclusively along cycle paths and footpaths. Another tour, “What did Schinkel look like in the past?”, provides insights into the village’s history through old photographs and information.

Cycling and Landscape

The Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has five long-distance cycle routes, five e-bike tours, and twelve themed routes. Signposted cycle routes lead through nature parks, along the Kiel Canal, in the footsteps of Stone Age history, and to bathing areas; some can be shortened for families. The district’s nature parks offer opportunities for hiking, cycling, and sightseeing. They include protected landscapes with a diverse range of plant and animal life.

In the Rendsburg area, the Kiel Canal, the Eider, green excursion destinations, maritime experiences, and cultural attractions come together with opportunities for watching ships, cycling, and swimming.

Culture and History

De Schinkler Möhl is Schinkel’s landmark and a regional excursion destination. As a local meeting place, it regularly hosts activities and events. Originally, it was a grain mill; on August 8, 2004, it was inaugurated as a center following extensive renovation and redesign. The Möhl also displays Stone Age finds from Schinkel dating from around 4000 BC, including a perforated stone axe and other objects. They indicate an early settlement.

The Protestant Church Zum Guten Hirten was inaugurated in 1960 as a simple wooden church with a gabled roof and a distinctive bell tower. It is open to people seeking a place for contemplation.

The Old Eider Canal connected Kiel-Holtenau with the Lower Eider near Rendsburg from 1784 to 1890.

Agriculture and Regional Production

Gut Rosenkrantz, formerly called Gut Schinkel, managed tenant farms in Schinkel. The organic farm at Gut Rosenkrantz cultivates many fields in and around Schinkel. Schinkel presents itself as an “eco-region”; a local example is a three-hectare flax-growing project that produces regional linseed oil.

Hof Mevs is a plant and goat farm with a cheese dairy and oil mill. Solidarity-based agriculture in Schinkel goes back to an idea developed in 2000: members pay a fixed amount so that the participating farms can plan ahead.
