Sehestedt: Hotels and Accommodation

Gut Sehestedt stands on the grounds of an old moated castle.

History

The estate complex includes a manor house dating from 1728. Three half-timbered buildings with thatched roofs at Gut Sehestedt are protected historic monuments.

The House of History displays historical sources, original objects, short films and special exhibitions. St Peter and Paul’s Church has a wooden tower and a largely late-Classical interior dating from 1829.

A memorial stone commemorates a parachuting accident involving Bold Guard near Sehestedt. Residents of Sehestedt and Scots dedicated it on 27 July 1975.

Geographical Setting

The construction of the Kiel Canal from 1887 to 1895 divided Sehestedt into a northern and a southern part.

The Sehestedt ferry provides a free crossing of the Kiel Canal for motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. It is located at canal kilometre 75.331.

Nature

The village circular walk is a 4.2-kilometre route from the Danish Monument to the ferry landing and along the canal to KanalTreff.

The Small Forest Circular Walk covers 3.0 kilometres through the forest, passing unusual trees and wetlands, and runs between the canal and the forest on the way back.

The Energy Park Circular Walk covers approximately 4.8 kilometres to the energy park site, where visitors can learn about renewable energy.

In Hüttener Berge Nature Park, a section of the nature park hiking trail reaches Sehestedt after 36.5 kilometres.

On Site

Right next to the ferry landing on the canal are a snack bar and a market meeting point. A motorhome parking area next to the ferry offers views of the Kiel Canal and ocean liners.
