Westensee: Hotels and Accommodation

The Westensee Tour circles the approximately 700-hectare lake through wooded and open landscapes; a shorter route along the lakeshore is about 21 kilometres long. The lake is included in the European FFH network of protected areas, while its eastern part and the Eider tributary are additionally designated for bird and nature conservation.

Nature and Trails

Westensee is listed as one of the settlements along the approximately 35-kilometre nature park hiking trail through the nature parks of Rendsburg-Eckernförde. The car park on the lakeshore is a practical starting point for cycling around the Eiderring Canal and Westensee or walking to the Tüteberg viewpoint in the vicinity of Westensee. Wartenberg is also located near Westensee; Borkenberg and Mövenberg are in the surrounding area.

Water

At the lakeshore, you can swim, go boating or canoeing, and fish. A reservable barbecue area is located near the bathing area; the Westensee inn on the lakeshore offers an opportunity to stop for refreshments with a view.

Culture and History

The medieval St Catharinen Church from the 13th century stands in the protected historic town centre. St Catharinen was founded as a filial church of Neumünster Abbey; its 13th-century fieldstone nave was extended around 1300 with a Gothic brick choir. The church preserves historic works of art and the tomb of the Danish military commander Daniel Rantzau; guided tours of the church are available by prior arrangement.
