In Bergenhusen, white storks return to their nests by early April; adult birds and young can be observed until August. The NABU Nature Conservation Centre, the Michael Otto Institute, features an exhibition on white storks. It is interactive and shows a real stork’s nest via live video.

Nature

Every year, the Michael Otto Institute in Bergenhusen is associated with more than 20 breeding pairs of white storks. It conducts nature conservation research on threatened birds of agricultural landscapes and the Wadden Sea. Its offerings include guided tours, children’s holiday days and environmental education events. A private guided tour of the white stork exhibition can be booked and, on request, combined with a village tour; stork wardens take visitors to the nests.

The Eider-Treene-Sorge landscape encompasses extensive lowland meadows along the Eider, Treene and Sorge rivers, as well as raised and lowland bogs, reed beds, wet meadows and shallow lakes. Nearby, in the nature reserve between Meggerdorf and Bergenhusen, lies the “Alte Sorge-Schleife” observation tower with a rest area.

Culture

The village church of Bergenhusen was consecrated in 1712 on the extended foundations of an earlier chapel documented as early as 1304. As a rule, it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from 1 April to 30 September. The 1735 vicarage is a remarkable ecclesiastical building and contributes to Bergenhusen’s village character.

Walking

A walk through Bergenhusen is marked by blue arrows, information boards and QR codes. It includes a short detour to the Margaretha windmill.
