The Duck circular route is 9 kilometres long, the Hedgehog circular route is approximately 8.5 kilometres long, and the Hare circular route is approximately 8 kilometres long. Along the roads, information boards provide details about the history of the town.
Routes and Cultural Trail
The Duck circular route passes a megalithic tomb and two other megalithic tombs. It also follows a paved path along the Margarethenwall. Around the Danewerk area, paths support hiking, cycling and recreation.
Signage guides visitors through the cultural and hiking trail. It includes 20 stations with information boards whose QR codes link to further information. The cultural and hiking trail is connected to the World Heritage Site and is an additional tourist attraction.
History at the Danewerk
A section of the 26-kilometre-long Danewerk crosses Ellingstedt and is locally known here as the Margarethenwall. In 2013, archaeologists discovered a Viking Age settlement site in Ellingstedt. The excavations also uncovered well-preserved remains of a medieval, possibly Viking Age route between the village and the Danewerk.
A large part of the core and buffer zones of the Krummwall lies within the Ellingstedt area. A small section of the Danewerk's main wall is also located within the Ellingstedt area.
Landscape
The Danewerk area in Ellingstedt is designated as a landscape conservation area. In the wider regional area, the Haithabu-Danewerk World Heritage Site has been protected under nature conservation law since 1950.
Market and Culinary Offerings
A weekly market with culinary specialities and a high-quality selection is held in Ellingstedt on Thursdays. The market attracts visitors from outside the town.
