Esgrus: Hotels and Accommodations

The municipality of Esgrus highlights the Romanesque St. Mary’s fieldstone church from the 12th century, as well as the Brunsholmhof and Frauenhof estate complexes, as particularly impressive attractions. The church combines medieval building fabric with furnishings from several centuries.

Culture

The choir of St. Mary’s Church in Esgrus was expanded around 1500. Its vaults feature late Gothic vine ornamentation, and the apse contains a carved winged altar with a Crucifixion scene. The furnishings also include a bronze baptismal font from 1619 with eight reliefs of apostles and a Baroque pulpit from 1681 with painted scenes from the life of Christ.

Since 1725, galleries have enclosed the north and west sides of the nave. The tower of St. Mary’s in Esgrus is 38 metres high. Concerts are held at St. Mary’s; the activities “Sitting in Silence” and “Light of Peace” are also associated with the church.

The Frauenhof ensemble comprises a listed manor house, a gatehouse, an access avenue and a row of lime trees. The churchyard at St. Mary’s is also protected as a garden monument and assigned to the church.

Nature

Esgrus has a natural monument consisting of a group of thirteen oak trees. At Osterpforte, the oldest tree is said to be more than 650 years old.

A hiking route leads north from Kirchberg towards Schadelund or Atzbüll.

Kleiner Hof am Meer in Esgrus offers an overnight stop for trekking. The site is located in an orchard near a small natural pond and has an outdoor bathroom with a shower, toilet and washbasin. Visitors can sample herbs from the herb garden. The trekking offer is aimed at travellers arriving by bicycle or on foot.

Activities

The Ortskulturring Esgrus organises lectures, hikes and cycling tours. It also offers painting courses; exercise activities are organised as ongoing courses.
