Culture

A prominent testimony is the Skarthi Stone runestone in Busdorf. It was discovered between two burial mounds in 1857, commemorates a retainer of King Sweyn Forkbeard, and is considered a local landmark.

The Haithabu Viking Museum has its visitor address at Haddebyer Chaussee, Federal Highway 76, in Busdorf. It presents archaeological finds from the former Viking trading metropolis in their historical context from around 1,000 years ago and is one of Germany’s most important archaeological museums. The reconstructed Viking houses of Haithabu provide insight into the living conditions of their inhabitants around 1,000 years ago. Visitors can explore them via narrow footbridges and across a harbor jetty bridge. The event program at the Haithabu museum complex also includes demonstrations of historic crafts and markets.

The ensemble of St. Andrew’s Church in Busdorf is a protected cultural monument. It includes the church and its furnishings, the churchyard, the graves dating up to 1870, the fieldstone wall, the ring of trees, and the side gate. The church was built around 1200 from fieldstones and preserves late Romanesque forms. Inside is a three-winged carved altar dating from the 1430s.

Nearby is the Busdorfer Schanze memorial site, featuring a cannon monument with a commemorative plaque and a six-meter-high Danish red-granite obelisk by the lake. More than 500 Danish and German, or Schleswig-Holstein, soldiers are buried at Busdorfer Pond in Schleswig-Friedrichsberg; they died in the fighting during the Schleswig-Holstein uprising from August 1850 to February 1851.

Routes and nature

The “Runestones – King’s Mounds” circular trail begins and ends at Haddebyer Chaussee 13, 24866 Busdorf. It is 12 km from Haddeby; the route is stated to take 3–4 hours. The trail combines natural and cultural themes and is considered accessible year-round.

By car, the circular trail can be reached from the A7 via the Schleswig-Jagel exit, the B77, and the B76 toward Haddeby. One described public-transport route runs from Kiel Central Station by regional train to Schleswig station; from there, the trail continues on foot along the E1 to Haddeby.
