Dannewerk: Hotels and Accommodations

Dannewerk is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that it shares with nearby Hedeby. The municipality is characterized by the Danevirke, the Ox Road, the Tweebargen and prehistoric burial mounds along the Ox Road.

Culture and History

The Danevirke Museum is located in Dannewerk near the main rampart and important structures of the early medieval fortification. It explains the significance of the Danevirke in the German-Danish War of 1864 and its use during the Second World War. The archaeological park includes the main rampart, Thyraburg, the North Gate, the Waldemar Wall and a reconstruction of Gun Emplacement 14.

The main rampart near Thyraburg has been dated to 737 AD, predating the Viking Age. At the end of the main rampart, next to the former Dannewerk Lake, Thyraburg occupies a strategically important corner position within the Danevirke.

Nature and Landscape

A nature trail around the former Dannewerk Lake combines an experience of the landscape with archaeology and environmental education. Information boards along the trail explain the local flora and fauna. They also cover old trees, wetland habitats, and the role and development of Dannewerk Lake within the Danevirke's historic defensive system.

The landscape around Dannewerk's archaeological park contains traces of history and rare natural habitats.

Trails and Interpretation

The motte-and-bailey castle presents the Middle Ages and regional history in a playful way for children and interested adults. The museum also offers a guided tour through the archaeological park: it leads from the North Gate via the main rampart and the Waldemar Wall to the reconstruction of Gun Emplacement 14 and back again.

A guided hike starts at the Danevirke Museum in the nearby area. It follows the rampart, passes Thyraburg and leads through Busdorf to the Viking Museum Hedeby. The historic Ox Road runs through Dannewerk and passes prehistoric Bronze Age burial mounds, including the interconnected Tweebargen. The route is suitable for hiking along historical traces and for archaeological discoveries in the open air.

Bus routes 8 and 670 run directly from Schleswig to the visitor center of the Danevirke Museum.
