Klein Rheide: Hotels and Accommodation
The historic Ox Road runs through Klein Rheide and offers impressions of the area’s natural landscape and cultural history.
Landscape
Klein Rheide is located between the geest and the lowlands of the Rheider Au. The surrounding wet meadows and pastures provide a habitat for rare species, including the northern lapwing. To the north of the village, the Rheider Au flows as a tributary of the Treene and forms part of the local Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape.
Paths and Cycling
The Viking-Frisian Way also runs through Klein Rheide. It connects St. Peter-Ording and Maasholm and highlights historical evidence associated with Vikings and Frisians.
Klein Rheide is connected to the Eider-Treene-Sorge cycle route network. The 240-kilometre route runs through the lowland landscape of Schleswig-Holstein and is described as signposted, separated from traffic and suitable for families. Klein Rheide itself, however, has no specially constructed cycle paths. Visitors should therefore expect the wider network of rural and regional routes rather than dedicated local cycling infrastructure.
Culture and History
Two cultural monuments are documented in Klein Rheide: a thatched-roof house built in 1872 on Untere Dorfstraße, and a double oak dating from 1898 at the intersection of Untere and Obere Dorfstraße.
The Archaeological Border Complex of Hedeby and the Danevirke is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a visitor attraction near Klein Rheide. The Danevirke comprises earthen ramparts with defensive ditches, a brick wall, two fortifications and a sea barrier.
In the Surrounding Area
The Runestone, Gottorf Castle, the State Museum, Hedeby and Aschberg are located in the area surrounding Klein Rheide. In the wider regional area are the Edelsturm ruins, Tolkschau, Lindholm and Nordhöhe.
