The Geltinger Birk nature reserve covers approximately 773 hectares and extends across parts of Nieby and Gelting.
Nature
Geltinger Birk combines beaches, lagoons, salt marshes, coastal forests, cliffs, heathland, dry grasslands, as well as fens and transitional mires. During bird migration, birds can be observed from Mühle Charlotte, the Beveroe Bridge and the Krötenweg path near Falshöft. Guided activities in Geltinger Birk cover the local flora and fauna, seasonal bird and frog watching, as well as the discovery of fossils and stones on Falshöft beach.
Getting Around
From Nieby, hikers can cross the Birk to Beveroe; cattle can be seen on pastureland along parts of the route. Between the entrances, an approximately 12-kilometre-long, developed hiking and cycling trail runs along the dyke around the Birk. There are five circular hiking trails for exploring the area.
A guided cycling tour around or across Geltinger Birk includes Falshöft Lighthouse and covers approximately 14 kilometres over a duration of 3.5 hours.
Orientation
Since 2003, the Integrated Geltinger Birk Station has been housed in a former pilot's house in Falshöft in Nieby. The nature station serves as a regional contact point for people interested in nature and species conservation and includes an exhibition on the history and development of Geltinger Birk.
Parking is available at the entrances to the Birk. Maps for orientation in the nature reserve are available at the Integrated Station in Falshöft and at nearby tourist information offices. In the Birk, visitors should use the designated paths; dogs should be kept on a short leash.
Getting There
Travel by public transport can be planned via nah.sh. The route to Falshöft Lighthouse from Flensburg or Kappeln leads via the B 199 to Gelting and then via Pommerby towards Nieby.
