Olpenitz: Water, Routes and Maritime Destinations

Olpenitz combines water, harbour and paths by the sea with destinations for excursions along the Schlei and Baltic Sea. Harbour and Waterways

The Olpenitz naval harbour was built between 1959 and 1964. To this end, part of the Schlei estuary was separated from the Schlei and connected to the Baltic Sea by a new entrance. In Olpenitz village, the canoe launch site next to the Schleimünde campsite provides access to the Schlei. Fishing trips begin at the home port OstseeResort Port Olpenitz at the mouth of the Schlei and head out onto the Baltic Sea and the Schlei.

Water Sports at the OstseeResort

The SUP beginners’ course teaches technique and safety. No prior experience is required to take part; you only need to be able to swim. SUP boards can be rented at the OstseeResort Olpenitz for independent exploration. Reservations are possible online or on site.

Swimming Cove and Play Activities

The gently sloping swimming cove at the OstseeResort is suitable for families with children and relaxed days at the beach. It is used for walking, building sandcastles, stand-up paddling and taking part in sports courses. The cove can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Access to this section is therefore clearly limited to walking or cycling. Adventure-Golf Olpenitz features 18 maritime and region-specific obstacles. Pit Pat Olpenitz is an outdoor obstacle billiards game located directly on the Baltic Sea, with 18 tables.

Cycling Route and Hike

The 53.1-kilometre cycling route „Round Tour from Schönhagen“ begins and ends at the OstseeResort Olpenitz and runs mainly along paved paths. Its route connects the museum harbour and the harbour of Kappeln, Gut Buckhagen, cycle paths along the Schlei, Kronsgaard Beach, the fishing village of Maasholm and the Schlei Bridge in Kappeln. The 53.1 kilometres are the decisive planning figure for the complete route; anyone cycling the entire route combines paved sections with several towns and coastal points. The „Schönhagen Cliffs“ hike begins in Olpenitz.

Lighthouse, Nature Reserve and Excursion Cruise

The Schleimünde Lighthouse is located in the vicinity of Olpenitz. Since 1871, it has served ships as a navigation and orientation light for the entrance from the Baltic Sea into the mouth of the Schlei. The „Schleimündung“ nature reserve is also located in the vicinity of Olpenitz, next to the Schlei dam; it is not accessible from the Ostseeresort Olpenitz. Harbour porpoises are occasionally sighted at the OstseeResort Olpenitz. In the area around Olpenitz, an excursion cruise by the Schlei Princess travels from Kappeln via Maasholm to the pilot island of Schleimünde and includes a 30-minute shore visit there. The shore visit on the pilot island is set at 30 minutes. In addition to the stretches between Kappeln, Maasholm and Schleimünde, the cruise therefore includes a time-limited stay.

Gut Olpenitz

Gut Olpenitz includes a manor house dating from 1618. Gut Olpenitz is available as a venue for weddings and events.
