Schaalby: Hotels and Accommodation

In Schaalby, the Füsinger Au flows slowly north of Schleidörferstraße through a broad lowland moorland, characterised mainly by extensive grassland use. The Loiterau runs through the municipality and flows into the Schlei; Moldenit and Füsing border the Schlei. A hiking trail running parallel to the Füsinger Au leads through the lowlands.

Nature

Reesholm is important for birdlife and provides breeding habitat and resting places for species such as yellow wagtails, lapwings, redshanks, shelducks, oystercatchers, reed buntings and reed warblers. From the Winningmay park area, visitors can walk to an observation platform. Access beyond the barrier is prohibited all year round.

A route to the Winning settling ponds crosses the Füsinger Au near its mouth and then leads through a near-natural ash and beech forest.

Culture and History

St. Mary's Church in Kahleby was first mentioned in 1192 and stands between Füsing and Schaalby as a landmark that shapes the surrounding landscape. It was substantially extended in the 13th century and received its tower during the reconstruction of 1855. Inside is a Johann Daniel Busch organ built in 1784, which was extensively restored in 1989.

St. James's Church in Moldenit dates from the 12th century and stands on a hill among old lime trees. Schaalby Watermill dates from 1842. Its overshot waterwheel has a diameter of nearly five metres and is connected to two millstones. The watermill is described as one of the few watermills still in operation.

In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Schlei was an important long-distance route to Haithabu; Viking settlements arose along its banks.

Trails

The circular hiking trail through the Füsinger Au is 24 kilometres long and begins in Kahleby. From St. Mary's Church, the route follows the Füsinger Au and the railway embankment of the former railway line. Schaalby also has a local hiking trail with standardised signs, themed information boards and general information about the town. The southern loop leads back via Schaalby Watermill, which is open for visits.
