The historic Schafflund water mill is located in Schafflund behind deciduous trees, a short distance from the B199. Grain was already being milled here using hydropower around 1300.
History and Technology
The large mill pond stored the energy for the mill; the water wheel is turning again. The Schafflund water mill was once the most important grain mill between the Flensburg city limits and the marshland. The so-called compulsory milling system brought grain here from the entire region.
A visit offers insights into the mill building and its old technology. The mill generates around 27,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity each year. Once a year, the Schafflund water mill opens its doors for Mill Day.
Water and Community Life
The Waldeck outdoor swimming pool in Schafflund has a large pool, a children's area, a sunbathing lawn and a kiosk. It is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors.
Landscape and Trails
The Schafflund water mill is considered a destination or stopover for regional cycling tours and a peaceful place for walks for visitors interested in technical cultural heritage. In the Schafflund cycling region, the history of the border and local border stories can be explored at information points and through conversations.
A hike from the Romanesque church in Wallsbüll leads through the Wallsbek Valley to the Schafflund water mill. The Wallsbek Valley was formed during the Weichselian glaciation.
