Near Schleswig, Haithabu and the Danevirke form a UNESCO World Heritage Site associated with Viking Age trade, border fortifications and the Schleswig isthmus. Visitor museums include the Haithabu Viking Museum and the Danevirke Museum.

Culture and History

Schleswig’s cultural attractions include Gottorf Castle, St. Peter’s Cathedral, the City Museum and the Holm fishermen’s quarter. The Gottorf Castle Museum Island in Schleswig brings together the Museum of Archaeology and the Museum of Art and Cultural History. The Museum of Archaeology at Gottorf Castle houses more than 10 million finds spanning 80,000 years of human history; the archaeological exhibits on Gottorf Museum Island also include the Nydam Boat and bog bodies.

On Schleswig’s Castle Island, the sculpture park displays more than 50 figurative and abstract sculptures dating from the late 19th century to the present day. The cathedral tower rises above Schleswig’s old town as a landmark. The town hall complex includes a hall built in the second half of the 13th century, in which extensive medieval wall paintings have been uncovered.

The Holm Museum documents the changes in the Holm district through historical and more recent photographs. Holm was an island for centuries before the fishermen’s quarter was connected to the Schleswig mainland in 1933.

Harbor on the Schlei

The port of Schleswig offers 185 berths for visiting and permanent moorings and has a bicycle rental service. From there, boat trips on the Schlei are possible. Cafés, bistros and restaurants at the city harbor serve, among other things, fish sandwiches.
