Nature and River Landscape

The Silberstedter Au is a tributary of the Treene. The Treene itself flows through a diverse lowland landscape with meadows, pastures, moors, and wetlands. In the wider regional area, the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape provides an important refuge for migratory birds as well as other animal and plant species.

At the western municipal boundary, the approximately 60-hectare Rumbrand forest adjoins the municipality. It is designated as a Natura 2000 protected area and includes legally protected biotopes.

History and Townscape

Silberstedt was first mentioned in 1416 under the forms Suluerstede and Sulverstede. Rosacker is considered the oldest settlement area of today’s municipality of Silberstedt to be documented in records and was first mentioned as early as 1196.

The settlement’s agricultural character can still be seen today in its farmsteads, farms, green spaces and cultivated areas, as well as older farm buildings, most of which have been converted into residential houses. A dairy cooperative is also part of the local history: it was founded at Hauptstraße 19 in 1884 and operated for more than a century.

The Oster Chapel in Esperstoft is situated amid nature beside a meandering stream that flows into the Treene Valley. The grounds of the Oster Chapel provide a peaceful setting for reflection.

Trails and Waterways

The tourist Stapelholmer Way passes through Holm, a district of Silberstedt. It leads through the natural and cultural landscape of the Treene region and is used for relaxed walks. At the same time, it forms part of a cycling loop with the Ochsenweg and the Thorshammer Way and connects with the Eider-Treene-Sorge Way.

The natural surroundings around Silberstedt are ideal for long walks and cycling. At the Bauer Jensen campsite, there is a canoe launch site with places to rest and snack. The smaller Treene is considered suitable for families as a paddling waterway. When travelling to a canoe trip on the Treene, bicycles can be transported to the destination on request.

Location

Silberstedt has good connections to the B 201 and is located near the A7. The municipality is approximately 14 kilometres from Schleswig, around 20 kilometres from Husum, and about 40 kilometres from Flensburg.
