Loit: Church, Schlei Nature Park and Loiter Au

Loit combines cultural history with canoeing and nature. Between the historic village church, the paths in the Schlei Nature Park and the Loiter Au, a village landscape emerges that brings together different interests through specific places and routes.

Culture and History

The small Romanesque fieldstone church dates from the late 12th century and retains irregular side walls. Inside are Passion murals, a late Gothic rood group, a granite baptismal font and a wooden pulpit considered the oldest in Angeln. The protected Loit Church ensemble includes the church with its furnishings, the churchyard, granite retaining walls and a ring of linden and elm trees. Loit Church is classified as a structure of historic, artistic, urban-design and landscape-shaping significance; the churchyard is considered an archaeological monument. The residential building at Dorfstraße 22 dates back to 1756 and 1845 and was part of a former three-sided farmstead.

Village Landscape and Nature

The B201 runs through Loit's built-up area. Loit lies wholly or partly within the Schlei Nature Park. This nature park covers approximately 52,000 hectares and is the second-largest nature park in Schleswig-Holstein. The nature park hiking trail extends for approximately 40 kilometres from Maasholm on the Baltic Sea to Fleckeby on the inner Schlei.

Alongside the canoe route on the Loiter Au, the nature park hiking trail forms a longer connection through the nature park. The approximately 40-kilometre hiking trail and the roughly 15-kilometre canoe route therefore represent different route formats; the canoe trip also takes approximately five hours. Hiking and the water route can thus be considered separately by extent and time indication, without mixing up the two courses.

The nature park can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on the water. The combination of the village church, the surrounding landscape and longer routes makes it possible to consider cultural and nature-oriented focal points separately according to their respective route and activity.

On the Water

A canoe trip leads from Loit to Winningmay on the Loiter Au. The route is approximately 15 kilometres long, takes about five hours and passes through an almost untouched landscape in the Schlei Nature Park. This provides both a specific distance and an approximate duration for planning the day.

The Loit canoe launch site is a canoe launching point on the Loiter Au. Trailers can access the site; it can be used at any water level and has a large car park.
