Burlöv – Village History, Mill Environment and Salt Marshes

Culture and History

The roots of Burlöv Church Village reach back to the Viking Age. Despite the land consolidation carried out at the beginning of the 19th century, the village retains a historic center with a church, vicarage, school, poorhouse and bell ringer’s house arranged in close proximity to one another.

The oldest surviving parts of Burlöv Old Church date from the 12th century. The church was built in the Romanesque style and has sandstone walls about one meter thick. Its furnishings include an altarpiece from 1598, a pulpit from approximately the same period and a baptismal font from the 12th century.

Burlöv Vicarage has been classified as a state-listed historic building since 1964. The 45-meter-long residential wing has stood next to Burlöv Church since 1773 and originally comprised 17 rooms and a cellar. The complex is also used as a local history museum. The lushly planted vicarage garden is suitable for a picnic under a 150-year-old chestnut tree.

Another historic remnant is a mound: it is the only surviving one of three so-called Darrhögarna and was deliberately placed high in the landscape.

The history of Kronetorp Mill is also closely connected with the surrounding area. The 27-meter-high windmill is Skåne’s largest wind-powered mill and belongs to the Dutch windmill type. Christian Bergh built it in 1841 on part of Arlöv No. 7, which belonged to Kronetorp. Together with the former miller’s residence, Kronetorp Mill forms, against the backdrop of the surrounding open arable landscape, a well-preserved mill environment characteristic of the grain-producing landscape. On the mill’s visiting days, the Mölleföreningen serves coffee beside the mill.

Nature and Trails

The Burlöv Nature and Cultural Trail runs through the agriculturally shaped landscape from Kronetorp Mill to the Sege River. Along the trail, visitors can observe older cultural monuments in the arable landscape, meadows, wetlands, ponds and small biotopes.

The coastal meadows of TÃ¥garps hed have been grazed since the Bronze Age. Grazing and regular flooding with salty seawater have led to the development of distinctive salt-marsh vegetation, with a diverse and partly rare range of plant and insect life. Lommabukten, with its associated coastal meadows including TÃ¥garps hed, is now a Natura 2000 site; a nature reserve was established there because of the sensitive natural environment and birdlife.

Bernstorps mosse is home to frogs, irises, the rare plant green garlic and numerous bird species. These include western marsh harrier, moorhen, cuckoo, nightingale and penduline tit. Bernstorps mosse is accessible from the Hornbach car park.

Festivals and Stages

Burlöv Festival is an annual local public festival featuring music, dancing, food and activities. Mill Day traditionally takes place on the first Sunday in July. In Burlöv, guided tours are offered at Kronetorp Mill, and various associations also participate.

Arlöv Theatre is used as a theater, meeting venue and club premises; the Arlöv Revue is performed there, and occasional music events take place at the open-air stage in summer.

Places and Connections

Stage 14 of the Skåneleden is connected to Burlöv railway station. It runs south from Spillepeng through Arlöv and continues across the golf course into the Bulltoftaområdet area of Malmö.

In Åkarp, Kulturhuset Möllegården combines a library, exhibitions, a creative workshop, events and performances. It has a permanent exhibition about Charlotte Weibull featuring dolls, traditional costumes, eggs and textiles from her collection. Kulturhuset Möllegården can be reached on foot from Åkarp railway station in approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
