Åstorp: Trails, Nature and Culture at Söderåsen

At the foot of Söderåsen in Åstorp begins the Skåneleden Ås till ås trail; the route continues to Brösarp in Österlen. Åstorp Municipality, together with Bjuv, Klippan and Svalöv, is part of Söderåsen. The municipality offers visitors nature, locally produced food, culture and activities. Trails and nature

The Tingvalla recreation area has six trails for walking or jogging. Along the entire Skåneleden Ås till ås route there are simple tent pitches with windbreaks and toilets. The Skåneleden thus connects a long-distance route between Åstorp and Brösarp, while Åstorps Hälsans Stig is a five-kilometre accessible and illuminated walking trail. It has no stairs, high edges or significant inclines.

Kvidingeprofilen is a six-kilometre trail combining varied nature and cultural experiences. At the same time, it conveys Kvidinge’s historical role in Skåne and Åstorp Municipality. The Klippan–Åstorp and Åstorp–Ängelholm sections of the Cykelleden Skåne cycle route also pass through the municipality’s natural landscape.

Kalvahagen is a municipal nature reserve in Åstorp, characterised by beech woodland and pastureland, and forms an important link between the centre of Åstorp and Söderåsen. The nature reserve also has a nature playground made of black locust wood in the form of an obstacle course.

Leisure

Kvidinge friluftsbad has a 25-metre pool, a children’s and teaching pool, and a paddling pool. The facilities also include boulders, beach volleyball, football, a pétanque court and an outdoor gym.

History and architectural heritage

Nyvångshögen is a slag heap from the former mining area, where hard coal was mined from 1907 to 1966. Nyvångs gruvmuseum explains how work was carried out in Sweden’s largest coal mine and how a new mining community emerged around a hundred years ago.

Gyllenbielkeska Hospitalet is one of Sweden’s oldest surviving poorhouses. Part of the 1729 building is used as a museum. Events such as a Christmas market and craft days are held annually in Perslund.

Tomarps Kungsgård was originally a Danish medieval castle and was converted into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. The complex is a two-storey, four-wing stone building arranged around a paved courtyard. Outside the wings of the building, the remains of the moat can be seen in the form of elongated ponds. The oldest north wing contains parts of a defensive tower built around 1300.

Culture and events

Kulturhuset Björnen hosts events of various kinds for all age groups and interests. The building was originally an EFS church built in 1919. Åstorp railway station is less than a five-minute walk from Kulturhuset Björnen.

The Konsthall presents a varied annual exhibition programme featuring national and local contemporary artists. Tomarps Kungsgård now serves as an art gallery focusing on Swedish and international contemporary art. During the main season, it hosts music, theatre, workshops and other events.

Local cuisine

Sigvard Månsgård’s farm shop in Åstorp offers a basic range of products. Meals can also be ordered for takeaway from the production kitchen. Sigvard Månsgård serves street food at markets and fairs; on Sundays, Sommargrillen takes place at the farm, using its own lamb.

The café at Tomarps Kungsgård serves homemade bread, open sandwiches, pies, fine pastries, small pastries and light lunch dishes.

Routes

Makadamrundan is approximately 2.7 kilometres long and runs around the old quarry in Ã…storp. The route offers views of the quarry and towards Helsingborg.
