Falsterbo – Beach, Nature and History

Falsterbo combines a distinctive coastal landscape with nature observation and regional history. The 4.5-kilometre-long beach stands out for its dense white sand; in some places, dunes form part of the beach landscape. However, dunes are found only along individual sections of the beach. Anyone wishing to combine beaches, protected nature and cultural attractions on their trip will find several clearly distinct points of interest here.

Beach and Måkläppen Nature Reserve

Måkläppen is a nature reserve in Falsterbo whose large sand deposits are constantly changing due to sea currents and wind. This shifting coastal landform defines the character of the area. Måkläppen is also an important breeding ground for wading birds and seals. In their natural habitat, harbour seals and grey seals can be observed there. The sand deposits and wildlife observation are part of the same protected coastal area. Falsterbo is therefore not only about the beach, but also about a coastal landscape where observing wildlife is closely connected with the changing shapes of the sand.

A 9-kilometre stage along the water

One specific way to get to know the landscape on foot is the 9 km stage of the Skåneleden Skanör-Falsterbo trail. It leads along paths and sandy beaches and beside a lively canal. The stage therefore covers several landscape areas rather than just a single coastal point. For active travellers, this route is an independent part of the trip alongside a stay at the beach and observing nature in the reserve.

Bird migration between late August and late October

Falsterbo is also an interesting place to observe seasonal bird migration. From late August to late October, up to 340 bird species pass through Falsterbo. Another established event is the Falsterbo Bird Show, which takes place every year on the first weekend of September. It includes guided nature tours and bird ringing. Bird migration extends over several weeks, whereas the Bird Show focuses on the first weekend of September. The migration period and the event weekend therefore offer two different focal points for anyone wishing to discover Falsterbo through its birdlife.

Lighthouse, museums and medieval church

Falsterbo Lighthouse is well preserved and is one of the oldest lighthouses in Sweden. It illustrates earlier lighthouse technology as well as the living conditions at a lighthouse site. In this way, it complements the nature experiences with an insight into the town’s maritime history. The northern wing of Andreas Lundbergagården houses a museum that presents a boatman’s house as it looked in the second half of the 19th century. Falsterbo Museum conveys the local history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Another historical landmark is Falsterbo Church: it is a medieval church dedicated to Saint Gertrude. Other destinations include Vellinge, Höllviken, Vastra Ingelstad and Skanör.
