Kattarp: Hiking, Nature and Culture in a Church Village with Medieval Roots

Kattarp combines manageable hiking trails with historical sites and varied deciduous forests. For travelers who want to combine experiences in nature with culture, several specific hiking routes lead through the surrounding area: the trails range from a short loop near the railway station to longer paths through the landscape between Kattarp and Hasslarp.

Hiking Trails through Farmland and Deciduous Forest

The “By till by” hiking loop is 8.5 or 9.5 kilometers long. It runs between Kattarp and Hasslarp through farmland, passing estates and old meadowlands with deciduous trees, making the rural character of the area visible. Those looking for a shorter route can choose the five-kilometer Signestorpsslingan, another hiking trail. It follows gravel roads and forest paths past historic estates and through lush deciduous forest.

The Äppelskogsslingan is a one-kilometer hiking trail. Äppelskogen is less than a five-minute walk north of Kattarp railway station. The route there is flat and, according to the trail description, suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. This makes the short route distinctly different from the longer trails, whose courses are characterized by fields, forest paths and historical landscape features.

Nature between Protected Area and Recreational Landscape

The area around Kattarp also includes several natural areas. Tursköpsskogen is a 30-hectare deciduous forest between Svedberga kulle and Kattarps by. It has been a nature reserve since October 2021. South of Jöns Jonsgården lies Signestorps skog, a small, species-rich and valuable deciduous forest.

Kattarps mosse is used for recreation and is classified as a key biotope because of its abundance of fungi. The Hasslarps dammar offer another form of nature observation. The present-day recreational area is known for its rich birdlife; visitors can walk, barbecue and watch birds there. The Västrabyslingan runs through a flat, expansive agricultural landscape. Those who want to explore the area by more than just walking can also cycle or hike along the old railway embankment between Höganäs and Kattarp.

Church, Church Village and Jöns Jonsgården

Kattarp has medieval roots. The church village consisted of 13 farms; a land consolidation was carried out in 1826. Kattarps kyrka was built at its present location as early as the beginning of the 13th century. Only the western half, the tower and the nave of the medieval church remain today. Kattarps kyrka also houses Nils Forsberg’s large altarpiece, which was donated in 1911 and signed in 1913.

Another point of cultural-historical interest is Jöns Jonsgården. The traditional half-timbered farm is managed by a foundation as a cultural reserve and has been a listed building since 1991. Guided tours of Jöns Jonsgården are available by prior booking. This makes it possible to view the farm not only as a building, but also as part of the traditional rural cultural landscape.

Today, Pågatåg passenger trains stop at Kattarp railway station, traveling toward Helsingborg and Halmstad. Information boards with maps are placed at strategic points along the nature and culture loops in Kattarp and Hasslarp.
