Köpingebro – Nature, Nybroån and Local History

The Lilla Köpinge Nature Reserve gives Köpingebro a distinct natural profile: it borders the town and comprises open, flower-rich grasslands as well as pine forest. There is also a walking path along the Nybroån, an upgraded cycling route between Köpingebro and Ystad, and the history of a railway settlement.

Natural Environment and Archaeological Traces

Lilla Köpinge is shaped by more than its protected landscape. The nature reserve also includes an archaeological area with ancient settlement sites. By contrast, a walking path is the focus along the Nybroån, while the Stridsvagnsspåret concerns cycling between Köpingebro and Ystad.

Railway Settlement and Sugar Factory

Köpingebro developed as a railway settlement with food industries and agricultural-related services. The Ystad–Köpingebro–Gärsnäs railway line opened in 1894. The area around the railway settlement therefore included both the railway line and food industries and agricultural-related services.

The Köpingebro sugar factory is part of the more recent history. It was closed after the 2006 beet campaign. The closure took place at a later date than the opening of the railway line in 1894.
