Malmö: Renaissance, Museums and Coast

Malmöhus Castle is the oldest surviving Renaissance castle in Northern Europe. Danish kings stayed in this castle during their visits to Malmö. Malmöhus Castle can only be accessed via stairs.

Culture and History

Malmö Museum is the largest museum in southern Sweden. Its exhibitions cover history, nature, technology and shipping, among other topics. Malmö Museum also includes an aquarium where visitors can see fish, reptiles, spiders and other cold-blooded animals up close.

Malmö Konsthall is one of the largest spaces for contemporary art in Sweden. Admission to all exhibitions and programs is free. A guided tour of Malmö Opera covers the history and architecture of the opera house and takes visitors behind the scenes of Storan and Verkstan, through the assembly hall, the boxes and the cafeteria. The theater of Malmö Opera was inaugurated on September 23, 1944, and is considered a masterpiece of functionalist architecture.

St. Peter's Church is Malmö's oldest surviving brick building and also the city's oldest surviving church. It is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; admission is free for individual visitors and school classes.

Nature

Kungsparken is Malmö's oldest park. It features many different exotic trees and was originally intended to resemble a botanical garden. Pildammsparken is classified as a unique park in Northern Europe because of its special history and strongly neoclassical design. It has two themed playgrounds: Spindellekplatsen and Teaterlekplatsen.

Ribersborg Beach, usually called Ribban, is designated as Malmö's most visited beach and stretches for more than 1.5 kilometers. Ribersborg Cold Bath House also makes it possible to swim and use the sauna during the colder parts of the year.

Malmö Folkets Park offers a wide range of activities throughout the year and is closely connected with the period when the labor movement emerged.

City Life

Lilla Torg was established as early as the 1590s and has since mainly been used as a marketplace for local small-scale trade. For many visitors to Malmö, Stortorget is the first stop. Several noteworthy buildings line the square, including Malmö City Hall, Residenset, Jörgen Kocks hus, Hotel Kramer and Apoteket Lejonet.

Malmöfestivalen began in 1985. It is an annual city festival featuring music, culture, children's activities and food, and it has been free since its inception. At Malmöfestivalen, numerous Malmö-based and international restaurants, food providers and food trucks offer special culinary experiences. Malmö Saluhall is a covered market hall and food court featuring distinctive culinary concepts, dedicated chefs and carefully selected ingredients.
