In the north of Östra Göinge, the area continues as an extension of the southern Swedish highlands, with strongly undulating, forested landforms. In places, the terrain is flatter and characterised by peatlands, while in the south it transitions into an open agricultural landscape. Östra Göinge is a forest landscape of Göingebygden with beech forests, Lake Immeln and historic Snapphanar areas.
Immeln is the largest lake in Östra Göinge. The Helge å flows through Östra Göinge from north to south and meets the Almaån northeast of Kviinge. Östra Göinge includes the towns of Broby, Glimåkra, Immeln, Sibbhult, Knislinge and Hanaskog.
Hiking and Cycling
The Skåneleden hiking trail runs through Östra Göinge along the Kust till kust section. The Skåneleden Immeln–Sibbhult stage is 14 kilometres long and classified as a moderate, blue-marked section. The Skåneleden stages in Östra Göinge have wind shelters and rest areas along the trail.
The Snapphaneleden connects Skåneleden SL1, Kust till kust, and SL6, Vattenriket. It runs from Brunnen in Arkelstorp via Immeln to its destination, Sibbhult. The circular trail between Immeln and Breanäs is designed as a two- or three-day route and combines hiking and paddling. There is a bus stop in Sibbhult.
Östra Göinge has four specially designed cycling loops that are suitable for both families and experienced cyclists. One cycling tour follows in the footsteps of the Snapphanar, conveys their history and also leads through the tranquillity of the forest.
Water and Lakes
Immeln is a classic paddling lake with islands and wooded bays. At Immeln, there is a child-friendly bathing area in a natural setting, as well as a kiosk, catering facilities and a campsite.
Along a 26-kilometre stretch from Nöbbelövs kraftstation to the Genastorps dammluckor, there are seven well-signposted fishing spots. The stretch also includes the lower sections of Baggabäcken, Kilingeån and Njura kanal.
History
Sporrakulla gård farm near Sibbhult is connected with the history of the Snapphanar and the 17th-century period when the Snapphanar and the farmhands fighting on the Danish side were active in the area. Broby hembygdspark is considered the largest open-air museum in Skåne and includes 18 old buildings illustrating various types of construction from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Knislinge kyrka was built at the beginning of the 13th century and is known for its medieval wall paintings. The Frännarp rock carving, “Urstenen”, is estimated to be more than 3,000 years old and depicts numerous horse-drawn wagons. It is considered the most extensive representation of wagon images in Sweden.
The Stone Museum in Immeln vividly demonstrates how stone was quarried and which tools were used in the process. In Sibbhult, there is an open-air stone museum and the Lapidarium, a museum of gravestones.
