Osby – Lakes, Forests and Culture in Northeastern Skåne

Osby is located in the coniferous forest region of northeastern Skåne. Several lakes shape the surrounding landscape, including Osbysjön, the largest lake. In Osby Municipality, the landscapes range from deep forests and flowering meadows to numerous lakes and 238 islands for visitors to discover. The destinations available for direct selection at this level include Osby, Svanshals, Killeberg, Visseltofta, Lönsboda and Hökön.

Nature

Näset is located on a peninsula in Osbysjön. It is a municipal nature reserve with grazed wet meadows and water-filled former diatomite pits. There is a car park at the Nytebodaskogen nature reserve. The forest itself is the only coniferous forest in Skåne resembling a protected old-growth forest, and it contains pine trees more than 200 years old. The Skåneleden SL1 Kust till kust, Stage 5, runs through Nyteboda from east to west; the reserve also has a circular trail several kilometres long.

Hiking and Circular Trails

Two marked circular trails are signposted on the Näset peninsula: one is 1.4 kilometres long and the other 1.8 kilometres. A hiking trail of around three kilometres leads around Hjärtasjön through mixed forest and offers views of the lake. The marked Klinten loop is about two kilometres long and can be completed entirely with a pushchair. Klinten also has a viewpoint with views stretching for kilometres across Osby and the lake.

Örnanäs can also be explored on foot. There, visitors can walk through the historic farm landscape among buildings, house foundations, fields and meadows. The trails connect different forms of landscape history, from open areas to preserved traces of former farmsteads.

Fishing and Paddling

Fishing in Osbysjön is free for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Species found there include carp, pike, perch, burbot and trout. Calm family paddling is possible around the Näset peninsula. A short, calm and beginner-friendly paddling route on the Helge å runs between Kornberga and Visseltofta and is suitable for adults and children.

Skeingesjön and the Helge å offer varied fishing waters with many fish species. There is also a boat launch at the northern end of the lake. Trout fishing is possible in flowing and calm water along the approximately 20-kilometre stretch of river between Delaryd and Hästberga.

Culture and History

Sliperiet Gylsboda has a permanent exhibition featuring old photographs from diabase mining at the beginning of the 20th century. Another exhibition is devoted to minerals and fossils. Sibbarps skans was built during the Kalmar War of 1611 to 1613 to reinforce the Danish-Swedish border.

The exhibitions at Lekoseum tell the story of BRIO: from the first toy made in 1907 and the classic Osby horse to the popular wooden railway from 1958. Örnanäs is the first cultural reserve in Skåne. The entire cultural-historical environment is protected there, including the landscape, buildings, knowledge and traditions.

Getting Around Osby Municipality

Along the Glimåkra–Osby section of the Skåneleden trail, there is a bus stop in Glimåkra and a train connection in Osby. For cyclists, cycle paths in Osby Municipality run through deep forests, along glistening lakes and across open fields.
