Saxtorp – Saxtorpsskogen, the Skåneleden Trail and Saxtorp Church
If you would like to plan your stay around nature experiences and historical traces, the area offers several clearly distinct points of interest for doing so.
Forest trails between Saxtorpsskogen and Järavallen
Saxtorpsskogen and Järavallen form a wildlife corridor where moose and deer may be found. A key connection for active days is the Skåneleden SL5 Öresund, Stage 9. This stage runs through Saxtorpsskogen, continues along forest trails into the Järavallen recreational area, and thus connects two different natural areas within the documented route.
For families, Sagoslingan is one of the special trails in Saxtorpsskogen. It is one of two short circular trails specifically designed for children. Trädslingan has a different focus, providing knowledge about the plants and animals of the forest. This means that, alongside the longer long-distance trail, there are also short, thematically focused routes.
Saxtorp Church: Building history and protected surroundings
Saxtorp Church has roots that reach far back into the history of the area. The oldest parts date from the 12th century, while its external appearance is entirely shaped by the 1860 renovation in the Neo-Romanesque style. In the south wall of the nave is a finely carved Romanesque portal, preserved to half its original extent.
The church interior also preserves several historical layers. These include 14th-century vaults and wall paintings likewise dated to the 14th century. A baptismal font richly decorated with human figures dates from the mid-13th century. Saxtorp Church and its churchyard are protected as an ecclesiastical cultural heritage site under Chapter 4 of the Swedish Cultural Environment Act. The church and churchyard also lie within the registered archaeological site Saxtorp 44:1, which comprises Saxtorp’s old village site.
Archaeological traces and motorsport history
The history around Saxtorp reaches even further back. The Saxtorp 7:5 site was used during several prehistoric and historic periods. Remains from the Early Stone Age point to organised hunting, probably of deer or other cervids. The 1930s introduced a completely different historical chapter: Grand Prix races were held on a route along country roads around Saxtorp at that time.
