Simrishamn between the Old Town, harbor and coastal paths

Simrishamn’s history is immediately visible in the townscape: the well-preserved medieval Old Town features cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses and intricately carved doors. For centuries, Simrishamn was both a fishing village and a trading center.

Culture and history

The Österlen Museum presents the history of Simrishamn and the surrounding villages through exhibitions, programs and the museum magazine Garvaren. The museum is open year-round. Admission to the exhibitions and the garden is free; the garden can be visited when the museum is open. Hafreborg at Storgatan 24 was originally built as a granary and houses exhibitions on floors 1, 2 and 3.

The digital walking tour of Simrishamn is available in Swedish, English and German. The Österlen Museum’s free apps offer a walking tour, a climate walk through Simrishamn and a guide to the “Simrishamn 900 Years” exhibition. This exhibition covers the history of the town from the 12th to the 20th century.

Autoseum includes a motorcycle museum focusing on motorcycles from the 1980s and 1990s. Autoseum also includes L.A. TOYs, a toy museum featuring toys from earlier times. The Church of S:t Nicolai in Simrishamn was first mentioned in writing in 1161. Its nave was completed in the 13th century, and the vaults were added in the 15th century. Its furnishings include a limestone baptismal font dating from the 12th century.

Coast and paths

The Vik–Simrishamn section of the Skåneleden runs along beaches, small paths and a cycle path. The fifth stage of the Skåneleden SL4 begins in Simrishamn. The Sydostleden is a 270-kilometer national long-distance cycle route with stages between Växjö and Simrishamn.

In the immediate vicinity of Simrishamn, Tobisvik has an approximately two-kilometer-long sandy beach. Also in the immediate vicinity of Simrishamn, the Hällristningsleden connects the rock carvings at Yxornas häll and Stenkilsristningen.

Harbor and everyday life

The culturally and historically protected ship T/S Sarpen has been moored in Simrishamn for more than fifty years. Visitors can take part in long voyages, weekend trips and half-day or full-day trips aboard the T/S Sarpen. Participants on the voyages can learn to set sails, steer, navigate, tie knots and cook on board.

Sillens dag is a popular tradition and family celebration in Simrishamn, associated with the long-standing importance of herring and herring fishing. The program includes freshly fried Simrishamn herring and side dishes. Market trading has taken place on Stortorget in Simrishamn for more than 100 years. The flea market at Suckarnas gång takes place on Saturdays during the summer half of the year and on five Sundays during the autumn season.

Mobility

Snurringen is Simrishamn’s own local bus route, and the ride is free. Simrishamn’s tourist center is located directly by the harbor in Marint centrum. In the immediate vicinity of Simrishamn, Tobisvik is served by buses 574 and SkåneExpressen 3; from there, it is 750 meters on foot.
