Smedstorp: Cultural Landscape, Trails and Nature

Smedstorp is surrounded by an open agricultural landscape. North of the station area of Smedstorp lie the church and manor house; this is where a varied cultural landscape begins, with clear traces of historic agriculture. Along the old main roads in the centre, Smedstorp preserves a historic urban structure. At the same time, the town retains the characteristic features of a station settlement dating from around the turn of the twentieth century.

Culture and History

Smedstorp Church was built in 1867 on the site of the former church. It contains a pulpit dating from 1597. The Bingska gravmonumentet in the church is unique in its design in Skåne. From the fourteenth century onwards, Smedstorp Manor belonged to the Danish Bing family.

The railway station is also part of the historic townscape: Smedstorp station building is a red-brick building dating from 1908 to 1910. The town is home to craftspeople, artists and galleries. Artistic activity in Smedstorp is particularly high during the Easter Art Tour.

In the wider region around Smedstorp, a runic inscription on a silver brooch from the grave of the Silver Girl dates from the second century and is among Sweden’s oldest runic inscriptions.

Trails and Exercise

Gårdlösaleden is twelve kilometres long and passes archaeological remains such as ship settings and stone circles. The start and finish of Gårdlösaleden in Smedstorp can be reached by train, car or bicycle. Maps of Gårdlösaleden are available at the information board next to Smedstorp station or in the old grocery shop immediately beside it.

Smedstorps motionsspår is a 3.5-kilometre, accessibility-adapted exercise loop. It begins at the sports field and runs partly through woodland west of the town. Smedstorps motionsspår is suitable for running and walking; benches are located along the entire route.

Landscape and Nature

In the wider region around Smedstorp, Listarumsåsen is a wooded moraine ridge on the open plain north of the town. The hundred-year-old woodland of Listarumsåsen is dominated by oak and beech trees. In the wider region around Smedstorp, Listarumsåsen offers two short circular walking trails.

Smedstorps Friluftsbad has a 25-metre pool, a paddling pool and a slide. The facility also includes a twelve-hole miniature golf course. Swimming lessons are offered at Smedstorps Friluftsbad.

Today, only the private main building of Smedstorp Castle remains; it is not open to the public. In the wider region around Smedstorp, the developed or agricultural land around the grave of the Silver Girl may not be entered without the landowner’s permission.
