Staffanstorp brings together settlement history, art and parkland with opportunities to get active. Its archaeological points of interest range from a prehistoric sacrificial site in the region to sites from the Iron Age and Viking Age; Sockerbruksparken adds a more recent historical layer. This makes it possible to plan your stay around a range of interests, rather than focusing on just one theme.

Archaeological traces and settlement history

At Staffanstorp Vikhem, there are remains of 96 houses that were in use from the 4th century until around 1100 AD. There is also evidence of ritual horse sacrifices. Staffanstorp Hagalid offers a different perspective: the settlement was inhabited from the Roman Iron Age until the middle of the Viking Age. Investigations there uncovered remains of buildings and craft activity.

The sites can be compared by their findings: Vikhem combines a specific number of houses with evidence of rituals, while Hagalid has a long period of settlement with traces of buildings and crafts.

In prehistoric times, Gullåkra mosse served as a sacrificial site in the region. Nearby, the Iron Age site of Uppåkra is four kilometres from Staffanstorp. It is one of Sweden’s largest archaeological sites. The comparison highlights their different chronological and thematic associations: Gullåkra mosse as a prehistoric sacrificial site and Uppåkra as an Iron Age site.

Park history and art

Sockerbruksparken was laid out in connection with the establishment of Sockerbruket in 1885. The park’s trees are among the oldest in Staffanstorp. Large, mature trees and abundant vegetation, including herbs and shrubs, define Sockerbruksparken. For visitors seeking a historical connection in a green space as well as archaeological finds, the park offers a different way to explore the town’s history.

The connections to the town differ: the training loop is described as being within walking distance of the built-up area, while the cycling section is described by its starting point.
