Tomelilla: Hiking Trails Between Nature Reserves and Cultural History
The Drakamöllan Nature Reserve has circular trails of varying lengths. A white-marked hiking loop of approximately three kilometres leads through the central part of the nature reserve. The Blåvingeleden is a nine-kilometre circular trail through Drakamöllan and onwards through the Lillehem, Maglehem and Kumlan nature reserves.
Nature and Trails
In the municipality of Tomelilla, hiking trails lead through Österlen’s cultural landscape, deciduous forests and along waterways. Gårdlösaleden is a twelve-kilometre hiking trail through arable land, grazed meadows and beech forests. In Skåne Tranås, Byarundan is an approximately two-kilometre circular trail. Twelve illustrated information boards provide brief information about the history of the respective locality. The trail has a paved surface, making it accessible also to visitors with physical disabilities.
The Borstakärr wetlands can also be explored on foot: a boardwalk leads across the marsh, and visitors can stop for birdwatching on a small island. The Borstakärr wetlands hiking trail is 2.7 kilometres long.
Landscape and Wildlife
The municipality of Tomelilla has 15 nature reserves. Drakamöllan encompasses a rare sandy steppe landscape on calcareous sandy soil. Fyledalen, which is 20 kilometres long, is traversed by the Fyleån through a flat grazing landscape. Seventeen of the 19 bat species found in Sweden have been recorded in the valley.
In the centre of Fyledalen, by the former brickworks, there are three hiking trails as well as car parks, information boards and a barbecue and picnic area. Surveys in the Borstakärr wetlands have identified around 320 different plants. The area is home to common frogs, moor frogs, tree frogs and common toads; black storks, white-tailed eagles and ospreys have also been observed.
Water, Mills and Industrial History
Hallamölla has five rapids with a combined vertical drop of 23 metres and is among the highest waterfalls in Skåne. The history of Hallamölla Mill dates back to the 15th century, while the present mill building dates from the 1850s. During annual openings, Hallamölla Mill is demonstrated to visitors.
Andrarum’s Alunbruk was founded by Jochum Beck in 1637. At the height of its development in the mid-18th century, the operation was the largest industrial enterprise in Northern Europe.
Culture in Tomelilla
Tomelilla Kulturhuset houses a library, an art gallery, a cultural school and a jazz archive. The archive contains approximately 18,000 items, including around 8,000 LP records. The centre’s varied cultural programme includes lectures, theatre performances and music evenings.
Cycle Paths and Bus Connections
Roads 11 and 19 pass by the Kronoskogen area. Cycle paths lead there from Tomelilla; at the Svampakorset stop, buses on Skåneexpressen routes 4 and 5 stop at least once an hour.
The southernmost section of the cycle path runs from Brösarp in the municipality of Tomelilla to Simrishamn.
Regional Products
At Smakbruket, visitors can sample lamb sausage and locally pressed juice. Appeltorps Lamm & Vilt is a small farm shop offering lamb and game products from the surrounding area.
