Yngsjö – Coast, Nature and Cultural Landscape

Yngsjö combines coastal nature, waterways and a distinctive village character. Coastal Landscape and Nature around Yngsjö

The Gropahålet Nature Reserve lies north of the Helgeå River’s mouth into the sea. Its landscape includes pine forest and coastal shifting sand dunes that reach heights of up to around 20 metres. Gropahålet also has a municipal bathing area with a naturist bathing area and a dog bathing area.

The Pulken-Yngsjön area also offers its own natural focus. Marsh harriers breed in the reed beds of Yngsjön and can often be seen hunting over the area. The annual crane watching, with thousands of cranes, usually takes place there around the turn of the months of March and April.

For orientation on site, the open-air museum and the birdwatching platform at Pulken-Yngsjön have been adapted for accessibility. The same applies to the footpath from the car park and to the toilet.

Village Character and Cultural Traces

The northern part of Yngsjö retains a distinctly older character. There, a narrow, irregular street network and small-scale buildings shape the village character. The small fishermen’s huts are important elements of the cultural landscape in the Egeside-Pulken-Yngsjö-Furuboda area and broaden the view of the maritime history of the surrounding area. Paddling, Cycling and Hiking

On the water, you can paddle from the Kavrö Bridge, just south of Hammarsjön, via the main channel of the river to Yngsjö. The paddling route passes through wetlands with reeds, willow scrub and alder carr, as well as along grazed waterside meadows.

For cycling tours, the 80-kilometre Stora Vattenriketrundan continues along the coast to Yngsjö. There are also various hiking suggestions around Yngsjö with different lengths. This allows cycling, paddling and hiking to be viewed as different ways of accessing the surrounding area, without any one activity defining the character of the entire village.
