Katrineholm: Nature, Culture and Trails

The Katrineholm Nature Map lists, among other things, hiking trails, bathing areas, nature reserves, outdoor fitness facilities, playgrounds, cross-country ski trails and other nature and excursion destinations in the municipality.

The immediate local area includes Katrineholm, Sköldinge, Valla, Forsa and Björkvik.

Nature

The Tornstugan by Lake Näsnaren has a seven-metre-high observation tower. The path to Tornstugan is approximately 600 metres long, wide and level. Next to the new birdwatching tower there is a raised viewing platform that people with mobility impairments can easily reach.

Tornstugan has a nature exhibition and materials for outdoor environmental education, including identification guides and equipment for observing insects. Paths and a training loop run through the Skirtorpssjön Nature Reserve; the Sörmlandsleden trail also passes through the protected area.

Krämbolsleden is approximately 5 kilometres long and has an accessible loop of about 3.2 kilometres. The trail passes three wetlands, grazing areas and fauna deposits. The 66-hectare Krämbolsskogen, which is predominantly covered by spruce forest, is owned by the Municipality of Katrineholm.

In the east of Katrineholm, Vattentornets nature park consists of mature mixed forest with many paths as well as walking and cycling connections. A hiking trail of approximately 3.5 kilometres through the Forssjö outdoor recreation area passes Jättens handfat, Jättens tvålkopp and Glysas källare. Elljusspår Forssjö offers illuminated running trails of 2.5 or 5 kilometres. The different trail lengths and path types can be compared directly.

The relatively rare species black-throated diver and great crested grebe occur in considerable numbers in the Municipality of Katrineholm.

Culture and History

Katrineholms konsthall presents contemporary art by national and international artists; each exhibition is supplemented by in-depth activities. Kulturhuset Ängeln in central Katrineholm is a meeting place for literature, art and cultural experiences.

Stage 27:1 of the Sörmlandsleden begins at Stora Djulö in Katrineholm and passes the manor house in the park. Stora Djulö was first mentioned in 1334 under the name Djula. Stora Djulö Herrgård has a manor-house café and an ice-cream café.

Julita gård preserves an early-20th-century manor setting with buildings, interiors, gardens and a play area. The manor park at Julita gård is open year-round outdoors and can be used for walking. Julita Skans is Arthur Bäckström's open-air museum and includes the Skansen Museum, the Skansen houses and the Skansen church.

Guided tours at Ericsbergs Slott include the Baroque chapel and the castle park; the orangery, the coach museum and the old greenhouses are also included in the same guided tours. The castle park at Ericsbergs Slott contains a true-to-scale copy of the famous Hampton Court Maze.

The garden at Ericsbergs Slott dates back to the 17th century; at that time, the grounds were designed as a Baroque park. The maze and park at Ericsbergs Slott are open to visitors every weekday outside public holidays. Tapetgruppen is planted each year with approximately 5,000 plants according to a Baroque garden design.

Town and Seasons

The Katrineholm tourist information office is located at Stortorget in Torghuset near the railway and bus station and offers personal visitor advice. There, visitors can discover a selection of handicrafts and locally made products. Katrineholm is a hub where several railway lines meet.

The Vattenlekparken in Katrineholm is accessible to wheelchair users and offers a shaded play area as well as a barbecue area. The ice rink at Stortorget in central Katrineholm invites children and adults to go ice skating.
