Oxelösund combines nature, harbour and maritime history. In the town and in Gamla Oxelösund, museums, exhibitions and historical information provide insights into shipping, coastal life and the railway.

Femöre: Nature Reserve and Circular Trails

The Femöre Nature Reserve is a municipal nature reserve on the mainland of Oxelösund. Most of the Femöre peninsula and the sea surrounding it belong to the nature reserve. Two marked circular trails of the Sörmlandsleden run across Femöre: one is 6 km long and the other 2 km. The two trail lengths offer a clear choice between a short and a longer circuit. In addition to most of the peninsula, the nature reserve also includes the surrounding sea.

The Kulturstigen is a blue-marked walking trail through Gamla Oxelösund. Signs along the trail provide information about life in the past and the construction of some older houses. On the Kulturstigen, the trail itself is connected with local history: the signs cover life in the past and the construction methods of older houses. In addition, there are a total of 26 red posts with pennants throughout Oxelösund. They provide more information about shipping and coastal life. The red posts complement this approach with information about shipping and coastal life.

Maritime History and Railway Culture

Maritime history is presented at several institutions from different perspectives. The section on Oxelösund in “Historien i Sörmland” deals with shipping, coastal life and the people who depended on the sea. The small Lotsarkivet is a museum about the pilots who lived and worked in the Oxelösund archipelago. The exhibition “Trygga vikar och farliga grund” at Koordinaten explores the interplay between the sea and the people who depended on it.

The Sjöfartsmuseet brings together several historical themes: it covers pilotage from the 17th century to the present day, a shipping business based on ore transport that existed for 80 years, and the history of the harbour. In the Skärgårdsmuseet in Gamla Oxelösund, you can see an exhibition about the Eriksson fishing family at Grantorpet in summer; it is updated annually.

The railway is also part of the town’s cultural profile. Lokstall houses a workshop where locomotives are maintained and restored. Numerous historic railway vehicles are displayed in the railway museum’s vehicle hall. Railway culture thus showcases maintenance and restoration at Lokstall as well as the presentation of historic vehicles in the vehicle hall.

Harbours, Cycle Paths and Shared Experiences

The harbour landscape includes two different documented points of call: Fiskehamnen is one of two guest harbours in Oxelösund. The guest harbour in Oxelösund at Badhusviken has a boat fuel station that is open during the summer season. For getting around on land, Oxelösund has an extensive network of cycle paths, which also enables visitors to get around comfortably.
