Västerljung
Västerljung between Lake, Sea Inlets, and Cultural Heritage
Västerljung lies in a valley between Lake Sillen and the sea inlets Hållsviken and Tureholmsviken. The valley is used for agriculture and forms the central arable farming area of the Västerljung parish. For your travel decision, the area thus combines a clearly recognizable landscape with cultural-historical destinations and described routes for walks, hikes, and cycling tours.
Church, Treasure, and Unusual Monuments
The history of the area is particularly evident around the church. Its oldest part dates from the 12th century. Behind the church is the grave monument for Imperial Count Walter von Hallwyl, designed by I. G. Clason in 1921. A large granite pyramid stands there on a gravel-covered terrace surrounded by massive granite walls.
The cemetery also preserves a remarkable detail: Since 1959, it has been home to an unusual rune stone with carvings on both sides. One side depicts figures, while the other bears runes. The discovery of the Tureholm Treasure is also linked to Västerljung. It was discovered in the Västerljung parish in 1774 and consists of a collection of gold objects from the 5th century AD.
Another visible sign of local design is the enlarged sculpture of a gold neck ring. It decorates a roundabout, has a diameter of 4.8 meters, and was made by students from Praktiska gymnasiet in Nykvarn. Numerous ancient archaeological monuments are also located near large recreational areas. In this way, historical traces, distinctive individual objects, and a valley landscape shaped by agriculture complement one another in the area.
Nature Trails and Active Excursions
If you would like to combine your stay with a manageable walk, Ekhagens Nature Trail offers a specific option: The accessible trail is 1.1 kilometers long. Signs in Swedish and English provide information about Swedish nature and the right of public access. The trail is therefore not merely a short route, but also provides background on the landscape and spending time in nature.
For a longer tour, Bergsrundan is described as an approximately 7-kilometer circular hike. It starts at Bergs Gård and is connected to the Sörmlandsleden trail. Alongside the short nature trail, this provides a significantly longer circular route, without both trails requiring the same type of excursion.
The MTB Arena is also located at Bergs GÃ¥rd. It is open for cycling around the clock; use is at your own risk. Those planning a cycling tour instead of a hike will therefore find an explicitly described option there with its own usage rules.
Local Flavors and Further Orientation
The farm shop at Bergs Gård sells products from other food producers in Sörmland, as well as beef from its own organic farm. This adds a specific connection to regional agriculture to the excursion destinations, which also shapes the valley around Västerljung.
For comparing other places in the same broader region, you can then consider Tystberga, Vrena, Nävekvarn, Nyköping, and Jönåker. Västerljung itself focuses on the combination of valley and agricultural landscapes, evidence of church history, archaeological traces, and nature experiences of varying lengths.
