Forest, Fjord and Trails

The Aabenraa forests form a green belt almost all around the city of Aabenraa. In Jørgensgård Forest, the woodland reaches all the way to the shore of Aabenraa Fjord. At Åbæk in the southeastern part of Jørgensgård Forest, there is a beach with beautiful views across the fjord.

Railways, Cycle Paths and Kløverstierne

The former railway line between Stollig and Aabenraa is now an approximately 4 km-long gravel-surfaced cycle path. The route length and gravel surface provide specific points of reference for planning your own route. The Aabenraa Veteranbane association offers another combination of railway history and exercise: in summer, it organises trips with rail bicycles on the tracks of the former Aabenraa railway line, which operated between Aabenraa and Rødekro until 1971. Two Kløverstierne routes are also available for walks and longer stretches through nature. The red nature and biology route is 8.3 km long, runs south of Aabenraa through quiet forests and wild meadows and past flowing streams, and offers a rich variety of plant and animal life. The green town and culture route is 2.4 km long and runs through central Aabenraa. The two Kløverstierne routes differ in length and surroundings: the 2.4 kilometres in the city centre contrast with the 8.3 kilometres through southern natural areas. When planning your own day, the distance and the change between urban paths and natural landscapes are key factors.

Old Town and Maritime City History

Sct. Nicolai Church is Aabenraa’s oldest church and dates from around 1250. Its patron saint is Sct. Nicolaus, the patron saint of seafarers. Aabenraa’s old town comprises well-preserved houses that offer insights into the city’s development. On a guided tour through the old town, you can explore cobblestone streets and charming lanes. Aabenraa reflects both Danish and German influences.

Museums, Guided Tours and Local Specialities

Kulturhistorie Aabenraa offers a bookable guided tour on Aabenraa’s maritime history. The exhibition “Fruer på farten” focuses on women from Sønderjylland who followed their husbands to South America, Asia, Australia and Africa in the 19th century when their husbands served as captains. At Brundlund Slot Art Museum, the collection of older art focuses mainly on artists from Sønderjylland or artists with a connection to Sønderjylland. The sculpture and castle park of Brundlund Slot can be visited free of charge.

Saturday Market on the Historic Market Square

Every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., a market featuring fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables as well as fish and cheese from local producers takes place on Aabenraa’s historic market square. The Saturday schedule, with its 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. time slot, defines the market’s visiting hours.
