Fredericia Municipality between the Fortress Ramparts and the Little Belt

Fredericia Ramparts are one of the oldest and best-preserved fortifications in Northern Europe. The network of paths, more than 18 km long, leads through green areas, grasslands and old rampart ditches. Several elevated viewpoints offer views of the city of Fredericia and the Little Belt. Fredericia is located in Lillebælt Nature Park.

Culture

The Fredericia City Museum presents the history of the city through exhibitions and events. The permanent exhibition covers Fredericia’s history from 1650 to the present day. The 6 July Days, held annually in Fredericia since 1850, provide a special historical highlight. They include an evening torchlight procession, a cannon salute, the raising of the flag, the laying of wreaths and flowers, and a parade through the streets of Fredericia.

The Historical Mini-Town recreates Fredericia as it was in 1849 at a scale of 1:10 and is the largest miniature town of its kind in Denmark. Special AR binoculars provide an augmented-reality experience in which the miniature town of Fredericia from 1849 appears digitally brought to life.

At Museumsgaarden Kringsminde, visitors can experience and participate in farming and rural life in Denmark from 1850 to 1950. The living museum also offers tailored guided tours or visits for groups, institutions and schools. Visitors can walk around the grounds, visit the historic buildings and experience the animals.

The Local Historical Archive has a reading room where visitors can consult archival documents and newspapers published in Fredericia from 1849 onwards. In addition, the archive preserves more than 60,000 registered images depicting subjects from throughout Fredericia Municipality.

Experiences

Admission to Madsby Play Park is free. The park offers adventure playgrounds, a Mooncar track and a Tarzan obstacle course. It also includes a mini-zoo, the Madsby train and boat trips on the lake.

Hannerup Forest has a mountain bike trail slightly more than 7 km long with 200 metres of elevation gain. Alongside the paths on Fredericia Ramparts, this provides a trail specifically designated for mountain bikes.

Coast

At Østerstrand, there is a buoy-marked swimming lane approximately 500 m long from spring to autumn. Training facilities and beach sports courts are available there to all visitors. Skærbæk Beach Park is a Blue Flag beach with picnic facilities, a shelter area and several paths. Canoes and kayaks can be launched from its landing stage for a trip on the Little Belt.

Bøgeskov Beach also carries the Blue Flag and is located on Vejle Fjord. A path there leads through a natural area with ponds for European tree frogs. Nyskov has a large observation tower with views across the city of Fredericia.

Nature

Trelde Næs is a natural area with forest, beach meadows, high cliffs and a Blue Flag beach. Naturcenter Trelde Næs lends out equipment for catching crabs and examining wildlife in ponds. It is freely accessible daily from 10:00 to 17:00.

The nature centre of Lillebælt Nature Park in Kanalbyen provides information about porpoises. From a viewpoint with binoculars, visitors have the opportunity to observe porpoises.
