Knud: Coast, Views and Quiet Landscapes

Knud Strand lies directly on the coast. The landscape around Knud offers many undisturbed experiences, especially along the coast. Good opportunities for views over the Little Belt and Haderslev Fjord complement the maritime perspective. For observing the landscape, Knud Strand combines the immediate coastal area with views over the Little Belt and Haderslev Fjord.

Between Lowland and Cultural Landscape

Knud Lyng is a 3-hectare lowland area. The proposed minor expansion of Knud would not change the overall experience of the place or its settlement structure. It lies within a sub-area of the valuable landscape “Kystlandskabet fra Sillerup Bæk til Hejlsminde” and in the character area of Fjelstrup agricultural plain. In the Fjelstrup agricultural plain character area, where the expansion of Knud is located, many living hedgerows and small woodlands divide the agriculturally influenced landscape into a medium-scale pattern. The expansion of Knud is therefore located in an area where conservation interests, agricultural land, hedgerows and small woodlands interact. Those who wish to view the coastal area and agriculturally influenced landscape side by side can contrast the coastal connection of Knud Strand with the lowland area of Knud Lyng.

The Road to the Coast

The road from Knud to Knud Strand passes through a characteristic landscape with relocated farms. The route connects the local setting of Knud with the coastal setting of Knud Strand. The relocated farms form a visible part of the route. The relocated farms are part of the rural character of the road. The connection thus leads from the agriculturally influenced surroundings to the coastal section. For those travelling from Knud, the route is therefore also a landscape passage.

Coastal Section with Protected Habitats

The coastal section J7.03, to which Knud Strand belongs, contains habitat types protected under Section 3, such as dry grasslands, coastal meadows, meadows, marshes, watercourses and lakes. At coastal section J7.03, Knud Strand belongs to the holiday home areas. Along the coastal section, coastal views combine with nature observation and quiet landscape impressions. When observing nature, the view extends beyond the coastal vistas to the section’s other habitat types. Dry grasslands and coastal meadows are subject to the same protection framework as meadows, marshes, watercourses and lakes. For nature observation, the section is therefore not limited to a single habitat. Marshes, watercourses and lakes broaden the view of the coastal section to include wet and water-dominated habitats.

Traces of the Funnel Beaker Culture

“Det store offerfund fra Knud” is considered Denmark’s largest hoard find of flint tools from the Funnel Beaker Culture (TRB). The objects from this find were deposited on at least three occasions during the Valby phase. The flint tools point to the Funnel Beaker Culture, while the at least three deposition occasions during the Valby phase indicate a chronological sequence. For those interested in culture, the find represents a separate area of interest alongside the coastal setting and landscape.
